Hip replacement surgery approved

October 22nd, 2010 3 comments

Just heard back from the Hospital for Special Surgery regarding my upcoming total hip replacement. They received the authorization fax from Tricare this morning.

I’m still waiting on my copy of the authorization, but it looks like things are all set for January 5th. Only 75 days away!

First appointment at Hospital for Special Surgery

Hospital for Special Surgery

Just got home from the Hospital for Special Surgery (HSS). Had my first meeting with my new surgeon, Dr. P.

I chose HSS because they are the #1 rated hospital in the country for orthopedics. They perform around 2,600 hip replacements each year and more joint replacements than any other hospital in the country. They’re located on the opposite side of Manhattan on East 70th.

After stopping by radiology for a couple x-rays, I headed to Dr. P’s office. I didn’t wait long, and after Dr. P examined my gait and range of motion, he looked at my x-rays. He explained that due to the avascular necrosis, my hip has basically become a square, instead of the nice round shape it was previously. The damage is so extensive that my only option is a total hip replacement. Read more…

Treating fractured hips

Been doing some research into hip surgeries and found a site that has some good explanations and pictures of various hip surgeries.

From the site:
Metal cup with polyethylene liner
A metal cup with a polyethylene liner that is inserted into the acetabulum during a total hip replacement.

Second semester at NYU

February 2nd, 2010 2 comments

Believe it or not, not a lot has happened since I last posted. I finished my first semester of going back to school in late December, and had the next four weeks off to relax. Since NYU knew the VA was going to pay for my spring semester, I didn’t need to make any kind of deposit, which was a big relief. I started back two weeks ago. It was difficult to get back into reading/studying in all of my spare time, but this semester is much more in depth than last, and I’m really enjoying it.

The leg has been hurting more this past week or two, but it’s probably just from using it again. I’m planning on getting a referral to the Hospital for Special Surgery, where I will hopefully have my hip replaced in January 2011, right after I graduate. It should be a shorter recovery this time.

Even though I know it will be difficult to come to terms with replacement surgery every 10-15 years, I can’t deal with this pain, arthritis, and severely limited range of motion for too much longer.

Post-op X-rays

Here are a couple X-rays that were taken immediately following my surgery.

You can see the drain tube I was talking about in this X-ray. A screw was also inserted to make sure the fibula graft stays put until it bonds with the hip.
